The genus name Hibiscus means\r\nmallow in Latin and Greek, and the species name laevis means smooth\r\nreferring to the leaves which are hairless.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nIt grows to<!--more-->\r\n\r\n a height of 4 to 6 feet and a width of 3 to 4 feet. It\r\nhas erect green stems and large, showy, white or pink flowers. It is\r\na relative of the okra plant and has a slimy mucilaginous sap.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nThis plant prefers full or partial sun, fertile soil, and wet\r\nconditions and grows best in the coastal and piedmont regions of\r\nNorth Carolina where it bears fruit from August through October.\r\nPropagation occurs through seed planting. The plant tolerates\r\npruning, but keep in mind that flowers will bloom on new growth.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nUse in a pollinator, butterfly, or rain garden, along streams or\r\nponds, or in wet areas of the cottage or native plant garden. It\r\ngrows quickly in warm weather and works well in the back of a\r\nborder, in wetland gardens, and woodland habitats. This\r\nheat-tolerant plant attracts hummingbirds, butterflies, bees, and\r\nother pollinators. It is browsed by white-tailed deer. It is a host\r\nplant for the larvae of the Gray hairstreak (Strymon melinus)\r\nbutterfly as well as the Straight lined mallow (Bagisara\r\nrectifascia) moth.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Summer is here.
