GMO crops contain high levels of the\r\ntoxin at harvest.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n&ldquo;Even with minimal exposure, glyphosate can significantly\r\nreduce the population of beneficial gut bacteria and promote the\r\novergrowth of harmful strains,&rdquo; the report found.\r\n<\/p><!--more-->\r\n<p>\r\nDr. Tom O&#8217;Bryan, internationally recognized expert on gluten\r\nsensitivity and Celiac Disease, says that &ldquo;the introduction of\r\nGMOs is highly suspect as a candidate to explain the rapid rise in\r\ngluten-related disorders over the last 17 years.&rdquo;\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nInternist, Emily Linder, offered some backup for the report&#8217;s\r\nfindings. She removed GMO from her patients&#8217; diets, finding that\r\nrecovery from intestinal diseases was faster and more complete.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n&ldquo;I believe that GMOs in our diet contribute to the rise in\r\ngluten-sensitivity in the US population,&rdquo; Linder said in the\r\nrelease.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nOh, and Roundup-Ready GMO foods may themselves directly contribute\r\nto disease:\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nGenetically modified foods such as soy and corn may be responsible\r\nfor a number of gluten-related maladies including intestinal\r\ndisorders now plaguing 18 million Americans, according to a new\r\nreport released on Tuesday.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\nThe\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.responsibletechnology.org\/posts\/gluten-disorders-linked-to-gmos-new-report\/\">\r\nreport<\/a> was released by the\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.responsibletechnology.org\/\">\r\nInstitute for Responsible Technology (IRT)<\/a>,\r\nand cites authoritative data from the US Department of\r\nAgriculture, US Environmental Protection Agency records, medical\r\njournal reviews as well as international research.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jeffrey_M._Smith\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/1\/16\/Jeffrey_Smith_2013.jpg\/220px-Jeffrey_Smith_2013.jpg\"><\/a>\r\n&ldquo;Gluten sensitivity can range in severity from mild\r\ndiscomfort, such as gas and bloating, to celiac disease, a serious\r\nautoimmune condition that can, if undiagnosed, result in a 4-fold\r\nincrease in death,&rdquo; said Jeffrey M. Smith, executive director\r\nof IRT in a statement released on their website.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nSmith cited how a &ldquo;possible environmental trigger may be the\r\nintroduction of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) to the\r\nAmerican food supply, which occurred in the mid-1990s,&rdquo;\r\ndescribing the nine GM crops currently on the market.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nIn soy, corn, cotton (oil), canola (oil), sugar from sugar beets,\r\nzucchini, yellow squash, Hawaiian papaya, and alfalfa,\r\n&ldquo;Bt-toxin, glyphosate, and other components of GMOs, are\r\nlinked to five conditions that may either initiate or exacerbate\r\ngluten-related disorders,&rdquo; according to Smith.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nAccording to the report,\r\nthese five conditions:\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<ol>\r\n<li>\r\nIntestinal permeability\r\n<li>\r\nImbalanced gut bacteria\r\n<li>\r\nImmune activation and allergic response\r\n<li>\r\nImpaired digestion\r\n<li>\r\nDamage to the intestinal wall\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nThe report also clarifies that these GMOs are quite different than\r\ntraditional hybrids.\r\nRoundup-Ready GMOs have had a specific bacterial gene inserted\r\nthat itself produces a toxin and makes the plant less susceptible\r\nto the toxins then poured on it.\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nAlthough wheat has been hybridized over the years, it is not a\r\ngenetically modified organism (GMO), which can only be created by a\r\nlaboratory process that inserts genetic material into plant DNA.\r\nThere are nine GMO food crops currently being grown for commercial\r\nuse: soy, corn, cotton (oil), canola (oil), sugar from sugar beets,\r\nzucchini, yellow squash, Hawaiian papaya, and alfalfa.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nMost GMOs are engineered to tolerate a weed killer called glyphosate\r\n(Roundup\u00ae). They contain high levels of this toxin at harvest. Corn\r\nand cotton varieties are also engineered to produce an insecticide\r\ncalled Bt-toxin. The report focuses primarily on the effects of\r\nthese two toxins.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nExecutive Director of the Institute for Responsible Technology,\r\nJeffrey Smith, explains, &ldquo;The Bt-toxin in corn is designed to\r\npuncture holes in insect cells, but studies show it does the same in\r\nhuman cells.
