Second, and perhaps most important, the company&#8217;s\r\nscientists had just spent more than a decade, and many millions of\r\ndollars, trying to create the Roundup-resistant plants that they\r\ndesperately wanted &mdash; soybeans and cotton and corn. It had been\r\nincredibly difficult. When I interviewed former Monsanto scientists\r\nfor my book on biotech crops, one of them called it the company&#8217;s\r\n&#8220;Manhattan Project.&#8221;\r\n<p>\r\nConsidering how hard it had been to create those crops, &#8220;the\r\nthinking was, it would be really difficult for weeds to become\r\ntolerant&#8221; to Roundup, says Rick Cole, who is now responsible for\r\nMonsanto&#8217;s efforts to deal with the problem of resistant weeds.\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\nSo they thought small scale would be the same as saturating\r\n90+% of every corn, soybean, peanut, and cotton field in the U.S.\r\nand numerous other countries with virulent poisons.\r\nBecause they wanted the money.\r\n<p>\r\n-jsq\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Wishful thinking.
