\n“We were very much surprised by our findings. Until now, it\n\n<\/a>\nhas been thought almost impossible for Bt proteins to be toxic to\nhuman cells. Now further investigations have to be conducted to find\nout how these toxins impact the cells and if combinatorial effects\nwith other compounds in the food and feed chain have to be taken\ninto account,” says Gilles-Eric S\u00e9ralini from the University\nof Caen, who supervised the experiments. “In conclusion, these\nexperiments show that the risks of Bt toxins and of Roundup have\nbeen underestimated.”\n<\/blockquote>\nThe toxicity of the corn itself may have been a surprise,\nbut not that of Roundup:\n
\nThese findings are in accordance with several other investigations\nhighlighting unexpected health risks associated with glyphosate\npreparations.\n<\/blockquote>\nPrevious studies,\n\nincluding ones by Dr. S\u00e9ralini,<\/a>\nalready showed exposure to glysophate (the active ingredient in Roundup)\nto be “a risk factor for developing Non-Hodgkin lymphoma”,\nand to be toxic to human umbilical, placental, and placental cells with a\nthat\n“is far below agricultural recommendations and corresponds to low levels\nof residues in food or feed.”\nIn Argentina,\n\nProf. Andr\u00e9s Carrasco has demonstrated birth defects in amphibians<\/a>\nand there is increasing evidence of human birth defects.\n

\nRegarding Monsanto’s GM corn itself, we already knew it\n\ncauses liver and kidney damage in rats<\/a> (later\n\nreverified using Monsanto’s own data<\/a>),\nand\n\nchickens fed feed including Monsanto corn show abnormal gene expression<\/a>.\n

\nNow we have even more hard evidence of the toxicity of Monsanto’s GM corn\nand of Monsanto’s Roundup.\n\nThe journal article<\/a>\nis available through Wiley online.\n
