The research showed that those\ninsecticides were present at high concentrations in waste talc that\nis exhausted from farm machinery during planting.\n<p>\nThe insecticides clothianidin and thiamethoxam were also\nconsistently found at low levels in soil &mdash; up to two years\nafter treated seed was planted &mdash; on nearby dandelion flowers\nand in corn pollen gathered by the bees, according to the findings\nreleased in the journal PLoS One this month.\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ag.purdue.edu\/entm\/Pages\/ckrupke.aspx\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" align=\"right\" border=0 src=\"http:\/\/www.ag.purdue.edu\/entm\/ProfileImages\/Krupke_Christian.jpg\"><\/a>\n&#8220;We know that these insecticides are highly toxic to bees; we found\nthem in each sample of dead and dying bees,&#8221; said Christian Krupke,\nassociate professor of entomology and a co-author of the findings.\n<\/blockquote>\nThe authors are careful to say they don&#8217;t claim to have found the\nonly cause of honeybee deaths, because they can&#8217;t prove that.\nThey do seem to have proved specific insecticides are one cause.\n<p>\nIs wiping out honebees worth the profits of a very few large\nagrobusinesses that sell these poisons?\n<p>\nWho sells this stuff, anyway?\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pesticideinfo.org\/List_Products.jsp?Rec_Id=PC40063&#038;Chem_Name=Clothianidin&#038;PC_Code=044309,%20660108\">\nBayer, Arysta, and Valent<\/a> sell clothianidin, and\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.syngenta.com\/global\/corporate\/en\/Pages\/home.aspx\">\nSyngenta<\/a> (SYT)\nsells\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pesticideinfo.org\/List_Products.jsp?Rec_Id=PC36879&#038;Chem_Name=Thiamethoxam&#038;PC_Code=060109\">\nthiamethoxam<\/a>.\nWhat&#8217;s Syngenta&#8217;s excuse?\n<blockquote>\nHow do we feed a growing world population?\n<\/blockquote>\nBy poisoning honeybees, apparently.\n<p>\n-jsq\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Is corporate profit worth wiping out honeybees?
