{"id":195,"date":"2011-12-18T13:14:30","date_gmt":"2011-12-18T18:14:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.okraparadisefarms.com\/blog\/2011\/12\/burning-planted-longleaf-16-december-2011.html"},"modified":"2011-12-18T13:14:30","modified_gmt":"2011-12-18T18:14:30","slug":"burning-planted-longleaf-16-december-2011","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.okraparadisefarms.com\/blog\/2011\/12\/burning-planted-longleaf-16-december-2011.html","title":{"rendered":"Burning planted longleaf, 16 December 2011"},"content":{"rendered":"We planted these longleaf three years ago, in 31 January 2009: 12,000 trees we dibbled in by hand.\nNot even three years old and some of them are 12 feet tall!\nEvery few years they need burning to reduce the weeds like dog fennel and to encourage the native warm season grasses (NWSG). The NWSG burn well: low to the ground, moving right along. The dog fennel not so much, but they do sometimes flare up and make a good show, like this:\n

\n\n<\/a>\nThe longleaf themselves are the most fire-resistant of trees.\nAlmost all of these longleaf will survive the fire and thrive.\nThe volunteer loblolly and slash, not so much, and any oaks or other trees even less,\nso fire favors the longleaf.\nWe had perfect burning conditions: 5-8 MPH wind from the northwest, blowing towards\nthe road.\n

\n\n<\/a>\nSome of the subdivision neighbors who are not familiar with prescribed burns\ncalled the county fire department.\nThey came out, took one look at the firebreak, and filed a report saying all was OK.\n
