She was a remarkable\r\nperson. I started graduate school at Vanderbilt in 1978, a few\r\nyears after Dr. Quarterman retired, so I didn&#8217;t have the privilege\r\nof taking her courses. However, she was still very much a presence\r\nin the department, attending seminars and interacting with faculty\r\nand students informally in the departmental conference room.\r\n<p>\r\n\r\nI also\r\nremember that she very kindly gave me a set of reprints of\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.okraparadisefarms.com\/blog\/elsie#Quarterman-Keever-1962\"> \r\nher classic<!--more-->\r\n\r\n\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jstor.org\/discover\/10.2307\/1942384?uid=3739256&#038;uid=2&#038;uid=4&#038;sid=21104193626757\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jstor.org\/literatum\/publisher\/jstor\/journals\/covergifs\/ecolmono\/cover.gif\"><\/a>\r\npaper (with Dr. Keever) on ecological succession in the coastal plain\r\nof the southeastern United States<\/a>. I still require my local flora and\r\ndendrology students to read this paper, and until fairly recently we\r\nhad access to Troupville Woods just west of Valdosta, one of her study\r\nsites.\r\n<p>\r\nDr. Quarterman&#8217;s ground-breaking work will continue through her\r\ngraduate students and their students, and she will also be remembered\r\nfor her research with cedar glades and the preservation of these rare\r\ncommunities in middle Tennessee. Dr. Quarterman was dynamic and energetic\r\nwhen I knew her at Vanderbilt in the late 1970s and the early 1980s.
