{"id":258,"date":"2011-06-26T19:40:08","date_gmt":"2011-06-26T23:40:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.okraparadisefarms.com\/blog\/2011\/06\/weeds-winning-against-glysophate.html"},"modified":"2011-06-26T19:40:08","modified_gmt":"2011-06-26T23:40:08","slug":"weeds-winning-against-glysophate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.okraparadisefarms.com\/blog\/2011\/06\/weeds-winning-against-glysophate.html","title":{"rendered":"Weeds winning against Glysophate"},"content":{"rendered":"Chuck Darwin was right!\nGlysophate is losing to mutant weeds.\n<p>\nGus Lubin wrote in Business Insider 9 June 2011,\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/pesticide-resistant-weeds-2011-6\">\nDramatic Proliferation Of Herbicide-Resistant Weeds Threatens U.S. Crops<\/a>\n<blockquote>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/10\/got-cotton-in-your-pigweed.html\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" align=\"right\" border=0 src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4090\/5068944537_600b272e79_m.jpg\"><\/a>\nResearchers at Iowa State University warn that herbicide-resistant weeds\nare proliferating and may jeopardize U.S. food supply.\n<p>\nIn an article published in Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry,\nweed scientist Michael Owen said the proliferation of superweed &#8220;has\nbeen fairly dramatic in the last two to three years.&#8221;\n<P>\nWeeds are developing resistance to glyphosate, the active ingredient in\nRoundup, which has been used extensively since 1996.\n<p>\nU.S. soybean, cotton and corn production could suffer from further\nproliferation, according to\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/view\/generic\/id\/330904\/title\/Weeds_increasingly_immune_to_herbicides_?utm_medium=twitter&#038;utm_source=twitterfeed\">\nScience News:<\/a>\n<blockquote>\n&#8220;Today, 98 percent of U.S. soybeans, 88 percent or so of U.S. cotton\nand more than 70 percent of U.S. corn come from cultivars resistant\nto glyphosate,&#8221; Owen reports. Reliance on these crops \u2014 and an\naccompanying weed-control strategy that employs glyphosate to the\nexclusion of other herbicides \u2014 &#8220;created the &#8216;perfect storm&#8217; for\nweeds to evolve resistance,&#8221; Owen and Jerry Green of Pioneer Hi-Bred\nInternational in Newark, Del., argue in their new analysis.\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\nOh, you mean like this\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/10\/got-cotton-in-your-pigweed.html\">\npigweed-infested cotton from last year?<\/a>\nThe Palmer amaranth is already just as bad this year.\n<p>\nIt&#8217;s not like this is news.\nWe&#8217;ve been going on about it\n\n<!--more-->\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/02\/mutant-pigweed-vs-glysophate-resistant-corn-soybeans-and-cotton.html\">\nfor more than a year,<\/a>\nit&#8217;s been\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/02\/pigweed-on-georgia-farm-monitor.html\">\nfeatured on Georgia Farm Monitor with Dr. Stanley Culpepper<\/a>,\nwho has\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/07\/managing-the-seedbank-by-plowing.html\">\npublished a study of the origin and spread of this mutant weed problem<\/a>,\nalong with a radical proposed solution:\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/07\/deep-till-back-to-the-future-of-plowing.html\">\nplow the weeds under<\/a>\nand <a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/08\/cover-crops-to-prevent-erosion.html\">plant winter cover crops,<\/a>\nand then\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/07\/cultivating-organic-peanuts.html\">use a cultivator once the new crop comes up.<\/a>\n<p>\nWe do these things on our land, and we have almost no pigweed.\nAlso clean food that&#8217;s good to eat.\n<p>\nIt doesn&#8217;t help poor Monsanto, though, which\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/10\/monsanto-downturn.html\">\nwent from Forbes Company of the Year last year to &#8220;the worst stock of 2010&#8221;.<\/a>\nSo sad!\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/view\/generic\/id\/330904\/title\/Weeds_increasingly_immune_to_herbicides_?utm_medium=twitter&#038;utm_source=twitterfeed\">\nScience News<\/a> quoted lead author Micheal Owen as saying:\n<blockquote>\n&#8220;It&#8217;s what Chuck Darwin talked about back in 1850. Organisms evolve\nin response to selection pressures in their environment.
