I didn&#8217;t do it!&#8221; says the yellow dog.\n<p align=\"center\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/98706376@N00\/5571823004\/in\/set-72157626387146422\/\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" border=0 src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5053\/5571823004_4f4130efb1.jpg\"><\/a>\n<p>\nThe yellow dog is right: I burned those trees!\nBefore picture of one of them:\n\n<!--more-->\n<p align=\"center\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/98706376@N00\/5066026233\/\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" border=0 src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4105\/5066026233_3f63efc03e.jpg\"><\/a>\n<p>\nThere is a lot less dog fennel and weed grass now.\nAnd the trees themselves, while shedding a lot of scorched needles,\nhave white candles (growing buds) on every limb.\n<p>\nHere&#8217;s a closeup of one tree:\n<p align=\"center\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/98706376@N00\/5571817714\/\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" border=0 src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5097\/5571817714_c52fc6b2ff_z.jpg\"><\/a>\n<p>\nIt wasn&#8217;t the best time of year to be burning longleaf\n(I know, Buddy, December and January).\nWe did lose a few, such as this crispy critter:\n<p align=\"center\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/98706376@N00\/5571225605\/\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" border=0 src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5308\/5571225605_9a6b47317d.jpg\"><\/a>\n<p>\nBut that&#8217;s why we planted them so close together in the first place:\nso we could lose a few.\nUnfortunately, the dog fennel (Eupatorium capillifolium) is growing back.\nTime to get out the hoes&#8230;.\n<p>\nOther longleaf (Pinus palustris) of the same small grass stage size have plenty of new growth already,\nkind of like\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/06\/the-art-of-managing-longleaf.html\">\nthe story in the Leon Neel book.<\/a>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/98706376@N00\/5571219513\/\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" border=0 src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5016\/5571219513_b53a01defb.jpg\"><\/a>\n<p>\nI used one of those as\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.com\/blog\/2011\/03\/its-an-opportunity-john-s-quarterman.html\">\na political metaphor<\/a>:\n<blockquote>\n&#8220;Like a burned-over longleaf pine, we can come back from this recession greener than ever, if we choose wisely.&#8221;\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nPictures by John S.
