{"id":303,"date":"2011-03-26T10:24:30","date_gmt":"2011-03-26T14:24:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.okraparadisefarms.com\/blog\/2011\/03\/factory-chickens.html"},"modified":"2011-03-26T10:24:30","modified_gmt":"2011-03-26T14:24:30","slug":"factory-chickens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.okraparadisefarms.com\/blog\/2011\/03\/factory-chickens.html","title":{"rendered":"Factory Chickens"},"content":{"rendered":"We were just driving and\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/98706376@N00\/sets\/72157626231244095\/\">\nthese were in front of us:<\/a>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/98706376@N00\/5561170524\/in\/set-72157626231244095\/\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" border=0 src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5145\/5561170524_1e7353f90e.jpg\"><\/a>\n<br>\n<small>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/98706376@N00\/5561170524\/in\/set-72157626231244095\/\">\nWhere are we going?<\/a>\n<\/small>\n<p>\nI recognized them from\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.foodincmovie.com\/\">\nFood, Inc.<\/a>\nThey get them out of the chicken houses at night.\nIt was maybe around 8 o&#8217;clock in the morning.\n(7:51 according to the timestamp.)\nAccording to Food, Inc., they&#8217;re put in the cages as little babies,\nand they put the sides down.\nThese chickens have probably never seen daylight before:\n\n<!--more-->\n<p align=\"center\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/98706376@N00\/5560595713\/\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" border=0 src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5252\/5560595713_21585af532.jpg\"><\/a>\n<br><small>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/98706376@N00\/5560595713\/\">\nNo way to hide:<\/a>\n<\/small>\n<p>\nSo here we are on our way to a meeting about farmers markets\nto learn from health department\nand ag. inspectors, and here are these poor chickens.\nOne of them was laying on its back.\nIt was alive and wriggling its legs, but it couldn&#8217;t roll over.\n<p>\nAll crowded together like that germs can spread easily,\nand they&#8217;re pumped full of antibiotics to prevent that.\nAnd don&#8217;t they give them hormones or steroids to grow fast,\nto make them profitable?\nAnd all those antibiotics and hormones and steroids go into\nour children when they eat the chickens.\n<p>\nAnd that&#8217;s safer than a chicken I could get from my friend?\n<p>\nWhen you see them in there, you think, &#8220;these are living creatures.&#8221;\nMaybe they&#8217;re just chickens, but they&#8217;re still living things.\nAnd what happens to the quality of the meat when you have this\npoor terrified chicken?\nDoes that fundamentally change the composition of the chickens\nas they go to the slaughterhouse?\n<p>\nGretchen says she doesn&#8217;t know how to blog, but she told me all that\nand I wrote it down.\nPictures by Gretchen Quarterman just north of Pearson, Georgia,\n21 March 2011.\n<p>\n-jsq\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"We were just driving and these were in front of us: Where are we going?
