{"id":375,"date":"2010-10-10T18:09:28","date_gmt":"2010-10-10T22:09:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.okraparadisefarms.com\/blog\/2010\/10\/corn-most-profitable-not-gm.html"},"modified":"2010-10-10T18:09:28","modified_gmt":"2010-10-10T22:09:28","slug":"corn-most-profitable-not-gm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.okraparadisefarms.com\/blog\/2010\/10\/corn-most-profitable-not-gm.html","title":{"rendered":"Corn most profitable: not GM"},"content":{"rendered":"Steve Connor writes in the Independent that\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/science\/it-pays-unotu-to-cultivate-gm-crops-survey-finds-2100999.html\">\nIt pays <u>not<\/u> to cultivate GM crops, survey finds<\/a>,\n<blockquote>\nThe first economic analysis of growing genetically modified crops on a wide scale has found that the biggest winners were the farmers who decided not to grow them.\n<p>\nThe study, which looked at maize yields in the corn belt of the United States, found that farmers who continued to grow conventional crops actually earned more money over a 14-year period than those who cultivated GM varieties.\n<\/blockquote>\nThe article then tries to say they nonetheless benefited from genetic modification:\n<blockquote>\nAll farmers benefited from the significantly lower level of pests that came about after the introduction of GM maize to the US in 1996, but the conventional farmers who continued to cultivate non-GM varieties also benefited financially from not having to pay the extra costs of purchasing GM seeds.\n<\/blockquote>\nUm, what about not having to pay for the pesticides that go with the GM seeds?\nThe study&#8217;s author admits they didn&#8217;t study that sort of thing:\n<blockquote>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.entomology.umn.edu\/People\/GradFaculty\/Hutchison\/index.htm\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" align=\"right\" border=0 src=\"http:\/\/www.entomology.umn.edu\/prod\/groups\/cfans\/@pub\/@cfans\/@ento\/documents\/asset\/cfans_asset_256430.jpg\"><\/a>\n&#8220;Additionally, environmental\nbenefits from corn borer suppression are likely occurring, such as less insecticide use, but these benefits have yet to be documented,&#8221; Dr Hutchinson said.\n<\/blockquote>\nThe Telegraph spelled his name wrong.
