Company workers spray toxic chemicals on them.\nDriving on GA 122 between Pavo and Barney and saw some electric company spraying going on. This fellow didn&#8217;t seem happy I was recording:\n<p>\n<object width=\"640\" height=\"385\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/crTMJ81EFd0?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US\"><\/param><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\"><\/param><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\"><\/param><\/object>\n<p>\nNote that this worker is unprotected from this poison. No eye covering, no mask. Spraying is a shame in many ways.\n<p>\nWhy do they do this?\n\n<!--more-->\nBecause it&#8217;s more expensive to bury the power lines\nand not have to spray. If they ignore the economic externalities of the poisons,\nsuch as poisoning crops, gardens, birds, and bystanders.\n<p>\nExcept they&#8217;re an EMC, an Electric Membership Corporation,\nso they&#8217;re poisoning their own members.\nAnd their unprotected workers, here seen in full spray:\n<p>\n<object width=\"640\" height=\"385\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/_TMcFMCVtJ4?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US\"><\/param><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\"><\/param><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\"><\/param><\/object>\n<p>\nWhat is he spraying?\nWell, there was no label visible, but traditionally it&#8217;s paraquat.\nParaquat is a toxic substance that requires a license in the U.S.\n(and is banned in Europe).\nParaquat is toxic via inhalation, oral, or dermal\nroutes, and also via food, as well as toxic to food crops.\nThe\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.epa.gov\/oppsrrd1\/REDs\/factsheets\/0262fact.pdf\">\nEPA requires this warning label:<\/a>\n<blockquote>\n&#8220;Do not apply this product in a way that will contact workers or other\npersons, either directly or through drift. Only protected handlers may\nbe in the area during application.&#8221;\n<\/blockquote>\nDoes that handler look protected to you?\nWere people driving down the public highway protected?\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.colquittemc.com\/default.aspx\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" align=\"right\" border=0 src=\"http:\/\/www.colquittemc.com\/images\/layout\/emcLOGO.jpg\"><\/a>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/98706376@N00\/5011294449\/\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" align=\"right\" border=0 src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4145\/5011294449_ff83e3f194_o.jpg\"><\/a>\nThe worker&#8217;s face and name badge are obscure in these pictures,\nbut the company logo on his shirt sure looks like\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.colquittemc.com\/default.aspx\">\nColquitt EMC<\/a>, as the location in Brooks County would also indicate.\nCuriously, there seems to be nothing on Colquitt EMC&#8217;s web pages\nabout spraying under power lines.\n<p>\nPictures and videos by Gretchen Quarterman, Brooks County, Georgia, 10 September 2010; blogged by John S.
