{"id":445,"date":"2010-05-27T07:28:00","date_gmt":"2010-05-27T11:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.okraparadisefarms.com\/blog\/2010\/05\/ecology-of-a-cracker-childhood.html"},"modified":"2013-09-19T12:53:25","modified_gmt":"2013-09-19T16:53:25","slug":"ecology-of-a-cracker-childhood","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.okraparadisefarms.com\/blog\/2010\/05\/ecology-of-a-cracker-childhood.html","title":{"rendered":"Ecology of a Cracker Childhood"},"content":{"rendered":"The other day somebody asked me to recommend some books\r\nabout longleaf forests, how they used to be, what happened to them,\r\nwhat can be done now.\r\n<p>\r\nI was going to start by posting a short list, but each item was\r\nturning into a review, so I&#8217;ll just post them one by one as reviews.\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/milkweed.org\/shop\/product\/216\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" align=\"right\" border=0 src=\"http:\/\/milkweed.org\/media\/items\/216\/ecology-of-a-cracker-childhood.jpg\"><\/a>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Ecology-Cracker-Childhood-World-Home\/dp\/1571312471\/ref=pd_sim_b_1\">\r\nEcology of a Cracker Childhood (The World As Home)<\/a>,\r\nby Janisse Ray.\r\n<p>\r\nHow dirt poor crackers and corporate greed destroyed most of the most diverse\r\necosystem in North America; yet these same people are the tragic\r\nheroes of the book.\r\nHalf autobiography, half ecology, this book will either get you with\r\nJanisse&#8217;s &#8220;stunning voice&#8221; or you won&#8217;t get it.\r\nIf you&#8217;re from around here, you&#8217;ll hear the wind in the pines, feel the breeze, and see the summer tanagers yellow in the sun.\r\nIf you&#8217;re not, here&#8217;s your chance to meet a &#8220;heraldry of longleaf&#8221;\r\nup close and personal.\r\n<blockquote>\r\n&#8220;I will rise from my grave with the hunger of wildcat, wings of kestrel&#8230;.&#8221;\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\nSee <a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/01\/janisse-ray-in-moultrie-26-jan-2010.html\">\r\nJanisse read in Moultrie.<\/a> &#8220;More precious than handfuls of money.&#8221;\r\nSee her <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Janisse_Ray\">wikipedia page<\/a>\r\nfor a pretty good bio.\r\n<p>\r\nBut read the book.\r\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/01\/moody-forest-home-of-the-red-cockaded-woodpecker.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" align=\"right\" border=0 src=\"http:\/\/www.quarterman.org\/pictures\/2008-09-25--baxley\/\/small\/p9250532.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nIf nothing else, you&#8217;ll never think the same again about Amazon\r\ndeforestation once you realize we already did that to ourselves,\r\nand in the south we live in the devastated remnants of what was\r\none of the most extensive forests on earth, with longleaf pine trees\r\n100 feet tall and 500 years old, maintained by fire, protecting everything from the Lord God bird to the lowly Bachman&#8217;s sparrow, from the rattlesnake-eating indigo snake to the beetles that live in gopher tortoise burrows.\r\nThe forest can return,\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.com\/blog\/2010\/03\/the-jobs-are-in-the-trees-reforestation.html\">\r\nbecause reforestation can pay.<\/a>\r\nMeanwhile, there are still places\r\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/01\/moody-forest-home-of-the-red-cockaded-woodpecker.html\">where you can see how it used to be.<\/a>\r\nJanisse Ray had a lot to do with preserving Moody Forest, too,\r\nbut that&#8217;s another story.\r\n<p>\r\n-jsq\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The other day somebody asked me to recommend some books about longleaf forests, how they used to be, what happened to them, what can be done now.
