One is lower cost. \u201cThe Roundup Ready system is not as cheap as it used to be,\u201d Shannon says.\n<p>\nThe cost for Monsanto\u2019s Roundup Ready GM soybean seeds has increased from $35 to $50 per bag while the cost for Roundup herbicide has increased from $15 to $50 per gallon. \u201cA lot of farmers are upset with Monsanto,\u201d Shannon says.\n<\/blockquote>\nAnd organic demand is having an effect:\n<blockquote>\nThe organic food industry is also spurring demand for non-GMO soybeans, says Craig Tomera, production agronomist\/crop production manager at Northland Organic Foods. \u201cOrganic food companies are switching to non-GMO soybeans until prices for organics drop and the economy improves.\u201d\n<\/blockquote>\nAll that and <a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/02\/mutant-pigweed-vs-glysophate-resistant-corn-soybeans-and-cotton.html\">mutant pigweed that Roundup doesn&#8217;t kill.<\/a>\nSo without even considering externalities (such as\nmutated frogs and human birth defects),\nit may be becoming less cost-effective for farmers to buy Monsanto.\nSo sad.\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Tom Laskawy wonders in Grist about Peak Monsanto?
