\nThere’s quite the controversy about\n\nthat recent study that shows that “inert” ingredients in Roundup\nare actually toxic.<\/a>\nApparently Dr. S\u00e9ralini hit a nerve.\n<\/p>\n

\nSome critics are making up stuff:\n<\/p>\n

\n\n\"EFSA<\/a>\n\n“The EFSA requested access to the raw data” \u2014Jon Entine<\/a>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nThat turns out not to be true:\n<\/p>\n

\n\nNo. EFSA has not requested raw data for the study as this information\nis not required at this stage of the review process.” \u2014EFSA<\/a>.\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n\n\"Monsanto<\/a>\nWho previously actually did refuse to release raw data?\n<\/p>\n

\n\nMonsanto only released the raw data after a legal challenge from\nGreenpeace, the Swedish Board of Agriculture and French anti-GM\ncampaigners.<\/a>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nHere’s the\nEuropean Food Safety Authority (EFSA)’s\nrather vague\n\nstatement about the recent study<\/a>\nand EFSA’s\n\nFAQ clarifying that statement.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n

\nHere’s\n\na much more substantive response from scientists<\/a>\nsupporting the S\u00e9ralini cell toxicity study.\nThe last item of that response:\n<\/p>\n

\n

\n\n\"GMWatch<\/a>\nCRITICISM: GM has been in the food chain for years in the US. Why\nisn’t there evidence of people and animals suffering more tumours or\ndying earlier? Why aren’t Americans “dropping like flies?”\n<\/p>\n

\nRESPONSE: Most GM crops are fed to farm animals, which have\nrelatively short lives either for meat or dairy production and so\nthere is probably not enough time for tumours to develop.\n<\/p>\n

\nAmericans have been eating GM food (soya, maize) for only a\nrelatively short time in significant quantities in processed foods.\nSo it may be too short a period for long-term effects such as tumour\nformation to be noticeable. However, we should also note that there\nis no labelling of GM foods in the USA and no monitoring of the\npopulation for ill-effects, so if GM food were causing ill health\nthis would be going undetected.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nIll effects of Roundup went mostly unstudied until scientists\nin places like Austria (the first study above) and France (the second study)\nand\n\nCanada<\/a>\nand\n\n\n\nRussia<\/a>\nand\n\nArgentina<\/a>\nstarted studying them.\nHey, what if U.S. scientists studied the effects of Roundup\nand other pesticides?\nOn the people applying them, on the people they drift onto,\non the people who eat the food?\nThen we might know.\n<\/p>\n

\nA few U.S. scientists\n\nalready have started doing that,<\/a>\nand\n<\/p>\n

\n

\n…researchers at the University of California, Berkeley’s School of\nPublic Health have found that prenatal exposure to organophosphate\npesticides \u2014 widely used on food crops \u2014 is related to\nlower intelligence scores at age 7.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nAnother U.S. study found\n\nPesticides Linked to ADHD<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n

\nAnd another U.S. study found\n\nToxic corn and cotton pollute our streams<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n

\nWhat else will they find if they look?\n<\/p>\n

\nMeanwhile,\n\nfar more than one study shows ill effects of Roundup and other pesticides.<\/a>\nMaybe we should think twice about using them, or eating foods that\nare contaminated by them,\nor drinking water with them in it.\n<\/p>\n
