In their country, roads are actually designed to be safe. Unlike ours:\n<blockquote>\n\u201cThis is where you live? This is your neighborhood? Your streets are designed to kill people.\u2019\u2019\n<\/blockquote>\nIt&#8217;s not hard to find <a href=\"http:\/\/esafetysupport.org\/en\/esafety_activities\/national_level\/sweden_.htm\">\ndescriptions of Sweden&#8217;s Vision Zero for no road deaths:<\/a>\n<blockquote>\nVehicle speed is the most important regulating factor for safe road traffic.\n<\/blockquote>\nHm, so <a href=\"\/blog\/2008\/11\/slower-is-safer.html\">slower is safer.<\/a>\n<p>\nQuarterman Road (like many other rural roads in Lowndes County)\nis a local neighborhood road, with tractors, bicycles, dogs, deer, and mothers rolling babies in strollers.\nAccording to <a href=\"http:\/\/knowledge.allianz.com\/en\/globalissues\/safety_health\/road_safety\/road_safety_vision_zero.html\">\nClaes Tingvall, Director of Traffic Safety, Swedish Road Administration<\/a>:\n<blockquote>\nThe idea of \u201dshared space\u201d between pedestrians and vehicles has been trialed successfully in Gothenburg and other cities, as long as the environment has been redesigned for slow traffic.\n<\/blockquote>\nAnd a budget-conscious county may be interested that he also says this:\n<blockquote>\nThe new safety principle, to control kinetic energy, is by itself cheaper than accident prevention.
