Cottonmouths may aggregate under\r\nwaterbird rookeries. Hibernation sites include rocky wooded\r\nhillsides, in crayfish burrows, under rotting stumps or other cover,\r\nor in burrows of mammals (e.g., beavers, muskrats) or tortoises.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nIn this pond they can&#8217;t be eating many fish, because there aren&#8217;t any.\r\nThey also eat mice and rats, and I would guess frogs.\r\n<p>\r\nWe do look for them all the time to avoid stepping on them.\r\n<p>\r\nThe species is actually threatened by habitat loss, as anyone can see\r\nand as the same source notes:\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nFrom a range-wide perspective, no major threats are known. Locally,\r\nthreats include wetland drainage for agriculture, residential and\r\ncommercial development, and forestry, and disturbance and direct\r\nkilling by humans (Blem and Blem 1995).\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nRight now the water is very low in our pond due to no rain.\r\nEven the industrious beavers can&#8217;t keep in water if there&#8217;s none to dam up.\r\n<p>\r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"At the far side of the pond, Yellow Dog spotted a moccasin before anybody else.
