I&#8217;ll remember him by\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.salon.com\/0002762\/2006\/02\/23.html#a1418\">\nwhat he fought for:<\/a>\n<blockquote>\nIt surely hasn&#8217;t made our streets safer. Instead, we have locked up\nliterally millions of people&#8230;disproportionately people of color&#8230;who\nhave caused little or no harm to others &#8211; wasting resources that could\nbe used for counter-terrorism, reducing violent crime, or catching\nwhite-collar criminals.\n<p>\nWith police wielding unprecedented powers to invade privacy, tap phones\nand conduct searches seemingly at random, our civil liberties are in a\nvery precarious condition.\n<p>\nHundreds of billions of dollars have been spent on this effort &#8211; with\nno one held accountable for its failure.\n<p>\nAmid the clich\u00e9s of the drug war, our country has lost sight of the\nscientific facts. Amid the frantic rhetoric of our leaders, we&#8217;ve become\nblind to reality: The war on drugs, as it is currently fought, is too\nexpensive, and too inhumane.\n<p>\nBut nothing will change until someone has the courage to stand up and\nsay what so many politicians privately know: The war on drugs has failed.\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Walter Cronkite died today.
