{"id":689,"date":"2008-08-05T08:56:05","date_gmt":"2008-08-05T12:56:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.okraparadisefarms.com\/blog\/2008\/08\/valdosta-train-stations.html"},"modified":"2008-08-05T08:56:05","modified_gmt":"2008-08-05T12:56:05","slug":"valdosta-train-stations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.okraparadisefarms.com\/blog\/2008\/08\/valdosta-train-stations.html","title":{"rendered":"Valdosta Train Stations"},"content":{"rendered":"In <a href=\"\/blog\/2008\/08\/the-titletown-express.html\">The TitleTown Express<\/a>,\nI guessed at where a Valdosta train station should go.\nI was thinking where West Hill Ave. crosses the GS&amp;F line from Hahira, but that&#8217;s\na mile from downtown: too far out.\nWhy not look to see where the Valdosta train station was before?\nWell, it seems there was not one, not two, but <em>three<\/em> stations\nin Valdosta, at least in 1919:\n<p>\n<img decoding=\"async\"  class=\"at-xid-6a00d8341cb65b53ef00e553cf09e28833 image-full \" alt=\"Valdosta, Georgia Train Stations, 1919\" title=\"Valdosta, Georgia Train Stations, 1919\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a00d8341cb65b53ef00e553cf09e28833-800wi.jpg\" border=\"0\">\n<\/p><p align=\"center\">\n<font size=\"-2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lib.utexas.edu\/maps\/historical\/valdosta_ga_1919.jpg\">Source map<\/a> found in\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lib.utexas.edu\/maps\/historic_us_cities.html\">\nPerry-Casta\u00f1eda Library Map Collection, University of Texas at Austin<\/a><\/font>\n<\/p><p>\nThere was one station each for:\n<\/p><dl>\n<dt>\nAtlantic Coast Line R.R.\n<\/dt><dd>\nbetween Patterson and Ashley just N. of Savannah Ave.,\n<br>\nwhere the U-turn now is before the overpass;\n<br>\nthese tracks were rerouted when the overpass was built;\n<br>\nironic considering that&#8217;s the line that caused Valdosta\nto be located where it is\n<p>\n<\/p><\/dd><dt>\nGeorgia and Florida R.R.\n<\/dt>\n<dd>\nW. of Patterson between Savannah Ave. and Branch St.\n(now W. Florida Ave.) about at where S. Toombs St. now crosses;\n<br>\nthese tracks go under the overpass;\n<br>\nthese are the tracks that go to Moody\n<p>\n<\/p><\/dd><dt>\nGeorgia Southern &amp; Florida R.R.\n<\/dt>\n<dd>\nJust W. of Patterson S. on Branch St. (now W. Florida Ave.);\n<br>\nthese tracks go under the overpass;\n<br>\nthese are the tracks that go to Hahira, Mineola, Remerton, Dasher, and Lake Park\n<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\nAll next to Patterson Street south of Hill Ave.,\nand within easy walking distance of each other and downtown.\n<p>\nSo 2 out of 3 station locations still have running tracks\n(and the third I think also has running tracks; they were just\nrerouted to go under the underpass).\nI have no idea who owns the station footprints.\nWouldn&#8217;t have to be precisely the same locations, anyway;\nsomewhere within a block or two would have the same\nadvantages of accessibility to each other and to downtown.\n<\/p><p>\n-jsq\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"In The TitleTown Express, I guessed at where a Valdosta train station should go.
