\r\nAfter the prescribed burn, it’s a lot easier to see,\r\nand there are more gopher tortoise burrows than we thought.\r\n

\r\nHere’s another Gopherus polyphemus<\/em> near the road.\r\nIt’s good there are so many.\r\nGophers are a keystone species, hosting\r\n\r\n hundreds of other\r\nspecies in their burrows, from rattlesnakes to beetles.\r\n

\r\nMany people are unfamiliar with why we burn pine trees.\r\nLongleaf pines, like these little and bigger ones, survive fire fine:\r\n

\r\n\r\n\"Looking<\/a>\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nEven other pine tree species, such as loblolly and slash,\r\nare less resistant to fire, and other trees such as oaks\r\neven less so.\r\nSo burning favors pine trees and especially longleaf pine trees.\r\nDon’t burn and you end up with an oak forest instead of a pine forest.\r\nAlso, don’t burn and you can’t even walk through because of vines\r\nand blackberries, nor can wildlife manage easily in dense undergrowth.\r\n
