Quarterman for Okra Paradise Farms, Lowndes County, Georgia, 7 September 2012.\n<\/small>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.georgiaconservancy.org\/river-pollution\/rayonier-altamaha.html\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"at-xid-6a00d8341cb65b53ef017d3bea9ba4970c\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a00d8341cb65b53ef017d3bea9ba4970c-pi.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>\nThis is the notorious Rayonier paper mill near Jesup, Georgia,\nthat Georgia Water Coalition ranked on its Dirty Dozen,\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.garivers.org\/gawater\/dirtydozen.htm\">\n2011&#8217;s worst offenses against Georgia&#8217;s Water,<\/a>\nas\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.garivers.org\/gawater\/pdf%20files\/2%20Altamaha%20River.pdf\">\n#2, Altamaha River: Rayonier Pulp Mill Discharge Destroys Fisheries<\/a>.\nThat report got\na reaction from Rayonier,\naccording to Mike Morrison in Jacksonville.com 8 November 2011,\n<a href=\"http:\/\/jacksonville.com\/news\/georgia\/2011-11-08\/story\/rayonier-acknowledges-waste-issues-0\">\nRayonier acknowledges waste issues,<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\nThe head of Rayonier acknowledged Monday that there are problems\nwith the water it discharges into the Altamaha River at its paper\nmill near Jesup but said the company is ahead of schedule on\ncleaning it up.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe Georgia Water Coalition on Saturday ranked a stretch of river in\nthe vicinity of the mill second on its \u201cDirty Dozen,\u201d a\nlist of the state&#8217;s most polluted or otherwise damaged rivers,\nstreams, wetlands and marshes.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cWe are very committed to the water quality of the Altamaha\nRiver,\u201d Rayonier Chairman and CEO Lee Thomas said. \u201cIt&#8217;s\nimportant to us, just as it is important to the people of southeast\nGeorgia. We&#8217;re working hard to improve the discharge.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/yAWNI1hknPo\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"at-xid-6a00d8341cb65b53ef017d3bea9ba9970c\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a00d8341cb65b53ef017d3bea9ba9970c-pi.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>\nRayonier&#8217;s pollution remains famous in song and story, such as in\n<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/yAWNI1hknPo\">\nthis YouTube video.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n\n<!--more-->\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yAWNI1hknPo\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=l2KLJaSNroc\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"at-xid-6a00d8341cb65b53ef017d3bea9bb0970c\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a00d8341cb65b53ef017d3bea9bb0970c-pi.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>\nMore from\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=l2KLJaSNroc\">\nDeborah Sheppard<\/a> of\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.altamahariverkeeper.org\/\">\nAltamaha Riverkeeper<\/a>\nabout Rayonier.\nAmong other things, she explains that the pollution includes\nnumerous chemicals, such as dioxins.\nRayonier has long been a major focus of Altamaha Riverkeeper,\nwhich is one of the oldest riverkeepers in Georgia, and a role model for the whole state.\nYet things are a little different where we are.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nWe are fortunate in our watersheds in central south Georgia because\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wwals.net\/\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"at-xid-6a00d8341cb65b53ef017d3bea9bb5970c\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a00d8341cb65b53ef017d3bea9bb5970c-pi.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>\nwe do <em>not<\/em> have any huge point sources of pollution like that\nin any of the Withlacoochee, Willacoochee, Alapaha, or Little River\nwatersheds.\nA new group,\nWWALS Watershed Coalition,\nhas formed to advocate for our watersheds,\nincluding educating about the non-point-source pollution we do have,\nas well as they many recreational and economic possibilities of our watersheds.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n-jsq\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"It smelled as bad as it looked: Picture by John S.
