\r\n\r\nEurope will enforce the world’s first continent-wide ban on widely\r\nused insecticides linked to serious harm in bees, after a European\r\ncommission vote on Monday.\r\n<\/p>\r\n
\r\nThe landmark suspension is a victory for millions of environment\r\ncampaigners concerned about dramatic declines in bees who were\r\nbacked by experts at the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). But\r\nit is a serious defeat for the chemical companies who make billions\r\na year from the products and also UK ministers—who voted\r\nagainst the ban. Both had argued the ban will harm food production.\r\n<\/p>\r\n
\r\nThe vote by the 27 member states of the European Union to suspend\r\nthe insect nerve agents was supported by 15 nations, but did not\r\nreach the required majority under EU voting rules. The hung vote\r\nhands the final decision to the European commission (EC) who will\r\nimplement the ban. “It’s done,” said an EC source.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n
