\r\nIf we didn’t burn, eventually what we’d get would be an uncontrolled wildfire with much worse flareups than that.\r\n
\r\nSomebody always complains about burning woods. Let the Longleaf Alliance explain the benefits of fire in a southern pine forest<\/a>.\r\n\r\n \r\nIt started easy this year.\r\n\r\n\r\n \r\n \r\nWildlife such as deer, quail, and gopher tortoise don’t like dense underbrush.\r\nBurning fixes that.\r\n \r\nFlaring up in thick undergrowth:\r\n \r\n \r\nAs you can see, a prescribed fire like this moves slowly enough that any wildlife in the way can move ahead of it.\r\nAnd come back to a refreshed forest that will be green again within weeks.\r\n \r\nIt went mostly low, a foot or two high flames, like it should.\r\n \r\n \r\nFast, too, with a nice south breeze. By fast I mean it took an hour and ten minutes to get this far. Any wildlife easily moved that couple hundred feet in that time.\r\n \r\n \r\nPart done, more burning.\r\n \r\n \r\nThis is about 1.6 acres of planted pines:\r\nlongleaf by the road, and slash and loblolly farther back,\r\ntowards a cypress swamp.\r\n \r\nHere are some more pictures.\r\nClick on any small picture to see a bigger one.\r\n \r\n \r\nI admit I used a second match to start this end.\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\nTook two hours from start to finish, 2PM to 4PM.\r\n \r\n \r\nThanks to the Lowndes County Fire Department for showing up after it was done,\r\nnoticing the firebreak, and calling to say they were just doing their duty,\r\nnot trespassing.\r\n \r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Here’s why we should have burned this patch last year, but unfortunately weather didn’t cooperate.
