\r\nTwo things I had never seen before:\r\na turpentine catface burning,\r\nand a guide metal for a McCoy turpentine cup<\/a>.\r\n

\r\nThis was during and the day after our\r\nprescribed burn of December 21, 2023<\/a>.\r\n

\r\nAlso, this catface was on a loblolly, not a longleaf pine.\r\n

\r\nAnd since it was hacked into the tree during the Great Depression,\r\nin the turpentining that paid off the mortgage on the farm,\r\nin the 85 or so years since the tree had grown out around it,\r\nyet left the actual catface exposed.\r\n\r\n\r\n

\r\nThose who do not live in a fire forest like ours,\r\nand who do not understand prescibed burns, please read this,\r\n\r\nPrescribed Fire, Longleaf Alliance<\/a>:\r\n

\r\nFrequent, low intensity, and often large scale, surface fires were\r\nthe dominant factor in shaping the longleaf pine ecosystems across\r\nthe historical range. This frequent fire regime, over generations,\r\nselected for longleaf pine’s fire-resistant attributes.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nPrescribed fire may be the best management tool that we have for\r\nattaining range-wide restoration and management of longleaf pine\r\necosystems. Increased frequency of fire leads to more diversity and\r\nabundance of grasses and forbs; seasonality of burn also plays a\r\nrole but is secondary to frequency.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n
