Three years later were\r\nthe famous Salem Witchcraft Trials<a \r\n id=\"dx1-816008\"><\/a>. During the course of the accusations by Rev. Samuel <span \r\nclass=\"cmbx-10\">Parris<\/span><a \r\n id=\"dx1-816009\"><\/a> against\r\nseveral people, several of the members, including Samuel <span \r\nclass=\"cmbx-10\">Nurse<\/span><a \r\n id=\"dx1-816010\"><\/a>, John Tarbell (Samuel&#8217;s next door\r\nneighbor<span class=\"footnote-mark\"><a \r\nhref=\"q2388.html#fn83x21\"><sup class=\"textsuperscript\">83<\/sup><\/a><\/span><a \r\n id=\"x1-816011f83\"><\/a>),\r\nand Thomas <span \r\nclass=\"cmbx-10\">Wilkins<\/span><a \r\n id=\"dx1-816012\"><\/a>, bore witness against the accusations. They were very careful.\r\n     <div class=\"quote\">\r\n     <!--l. 555--><p class=\"noindent\" >&#8220;Their line of action was extremely narrow. It was necessary to avoid all personalities, and every\r\n     appearance of passion or excitement; to make no charge against Mr. Parris that could touch the\r\n     church, as such, or reflect upon the courts, magistrates, or any others that had taken part in the\r\n     prosecutions. It was necessary to avoid<!--more-->\r\n\r\n putting anything into writing, with their names attached,\r\n     which could in any way be tortured into a libel. Parris lets fall expressions which show that he\r\n     was on the watch for something of the kind to seize upon, to transfer the movement from the\r\n     church to the courts. Entirely unaccustomed to public speaking, these three farmers had to meet\r\n     assemlages composed of their opponents, and much wrought up against them; to make statements,\r\n     and respond to interrogatories and propositions, the full and ultimate bearing of which was not\r\n     always apparent; any unguarded expression might be fatal to their cause. Their safety depended\r\n     upon using the right word at the right time and in the right manner, and in withholding the\r\n     statement of their grievances, in adequate force of language until they were under the shelter of a\r\n     council.&#8221;<span class=\"footnote-mark\"><a \r\nhref=\"q2389.html#fn84x21\"><sup class=\"textsuperscript\">84<\/sup><\/a><\/span><a \r\n id=\"x1-816013f84\"><\/a><\/div>\r\n<!--l. 576--><p class=\"indent\" >   Those three began a counter-offensive against Parris according to Matthew xviii 15-17. Peter <span \r\nclass=\"cmbx-10\">Cloyse<\/span><a \r\n id=\"dx1-816014\"><\/a> joined\r\nthem. Parris saw them only one at a time.\r\n     <div class=\"quote\">\r\n     <!--l. 581--><p class=\"noindent\" >&#8220;He also took the ground that they could not be witnesses for each other, but that he should\r\n     treat them all as only one person in the transaction. A sense of the injustice of his conduct,\r\n     or some other consideration, led William Way, another of the brethren, to go with them as\r\n     a witness. Nurse, Tarbell, Wilkins, Cloyse, and Way went to his house together. He said that\r\n     the four first were but one person in the case; but admitted that Way was a distinct person,\r\n     a brother of accredited standing, and a witness. He escaped, however, under the subterfuge\r\n     that the gospel rule required &#8216;two or <span \r\nclass=\"cmti-10\">three <\/span>witnesses.&#8217; In this way, the matter stood for some\r\n     time&#8230;&#8221;<span class=\"footnote-mark\"><a \r\nhref=\"q2390.html#fn85x21\"><sup class=\"textsuperscript\">85<\/sup><\/a><\/span><a \r\n id=\"x1-816015f85\"><\/a><\/div>\r\n<!--l. 593--><p class=\"indent\" >   So our ancestor&#8217;s intervention did not stop the accusations, but it helped delay further action until a council\r\ncould be called by the clergy of Salem and Boston. As everyone knows, people were hanged anyway, but the matter\r\ncould have been even worse without the intervention of the council.\r\n<!--l. 599--><p class=\"indent\" >   The &#8220;other consideration&#8221; may have been that Thomas Wilkins&#8217; grandmother was Hannah <span \r\nclass=\"cmbx-10\">Way <\/span>(1615&#8211;1701)<a \r\n id=\"dx1-816016\"><\/a>,\r\nhalf-sister of William <span \r\nclass=\"cmbx-10\">Way <\/span>(1652&#8211;1725)<a \r\n id=\"dx1-816017\"><\/a>&#8217;s father Aaron <span \r\nclass=\"cmbx-10\">Way <\/span>Sr. (1613&#8211;1695)<a \r\n id=\"dx1-816018\"><\/a>, so Thomas was William&#8217;s first cousin\r\nonce removed. See Figure&#x00A0;<a \r\nhref=\"#x1-8160224\">21.4<!--tex4ht:ref: fig:ancwitch --><\/a>. William and his nephew Aaron <span \r\nclass=\"cmbx-10\">Way <\/span>(1674&#8211;1735)<a \r\n id=\"dx1-816019\"><\/a> owned land just across Will&#8217;s Hill\r\nfrom Bray <span \r\nclass=\"cmbx-10\">Wilkins <\/span>(1611&#8211;1701)<a \r\n id=\"dx1-816020\"><\/a>, Hannah&#8217;s husband and Thomas&#8217;s grandfather. In addition, Thomas&#8217; uncle Samuel\r\n<span \r\nclass=\"cmbx-10\">Wilkins <\/span>(1636&#8211;1688)<a \r\n id=\"dx1-816021\"><\/a> had run afoul (rather literally, for foul language) of Rev. Parris some years ago and tried to\r\nget the Rev. removed. When Samuel died in 1688 Rev. Parris enumerated all his sins in the church\r\nobituary. So there were several family reasons for William Way to get involved in opposing Rev. Samuel <span \r\nclass=\"cmbx-10\">Nurse<\/span><a \r\n id=\"dx1-816027\"><\/a> was\r\nRebecca&#8217;s husband. Her sisters Mary <span \r\nclass=\"cmbx-10\">Towne <\/span>(&#8211;1692)<a \r\n id=\"dx1-816028\"><\/a> and Sarah <span \r\nclass=\"cmbx-10\">Towne<\/span><a \r\n id=\"dx1-816029\"><\/a> were also accused, and Peter <span \r\nclass=\"cmbx-10\">Cloyse<\/span><a \r\n id=\"dx1-816030\"><\/a> was\r\nSarah&#8217;s husband. Thomas&#8217;s sister Margaret <span \r\nclass=\"cmbx-10\">Wilkins <\/span>(1669&#8211;1751)<a \r\n id=\"dx1-816031\"><\/a> was married to John <span \r\nclass=\"cmbx-10\">Willard <\/span>(1687&#8211;1692)<a \r\n id=\"dx1-816032\"><\/a>, who\r\nwas also accused.\r\n<!--l. 628--><p class=\"indent\" >   None of William Way&#8217;s immediate relatives were accused. So there were several reasons why Rev. Parris could\r\nget away with lumping the close relatives of the accused together as a single person, yet he had to admit a Way as a\r\nwitness in full standing. William&#8217;s brother Q!AQJr<a \r\n id=\"dx1-816033\"><\/a> was also opposed to the belief in witches and thus to\r\nthe trials, and his wife was Mary <span \r\nclass=\"cmbx-10\">Maverick <\/span>(1651&#8211;)<a \r\n id=\"dx1-816034\"><\/a>, a granddaughter Revd. Mr. John <span \r\nclass=\"cmbx-10\">Maverick<\/span>\r\n(1578&#8211;1636)<a \r\n id=\"dx1-816035\"><\/a>, one of the original pastors of the Dorchester, Mass., church. The Way family could thus be\r\nconsidered to represent the original religious and family traditions of the settlers better than Rev.\r\nParris.\r\n<!--l. 642--><p class=\"indent\" >   Nonetheless, Rebecca <span \r\nclass=\"cmbx-10\">Towne <\/span>(&#8211;1692)<a \r\n id=\"dx1-816036\"><\/a>, Mary <span \r\nclass=\"cmbx-10\">Towne <\/span>(&#8211;1692)<a \r\n id=\"dx1-816037\"><\/a>, and John <span \r\nclass=\"cmbx-10\">Willard <\/span>(1687&#8211;1692)<a \r\n id=\"dx1-816038\"><\/a> were hanged.\r\nSarah <span \r\nclass=\"cmbx-10\">Towne<\/span><a \r\n id=\"dx1-816039\"><\/a> was apparently released.
