<\/a>\r\nThe biotechnology industry has pulled a fast one with regards to the\r\nlegitimacy of genetically-modified organisms (GMOs). Straddling both\r\nsides of the fence, multinational corporations like Monsanto\r\ncontinually claim that their GM monstrosities are “substantially\r\nequivalent” to natural crops when it comes to their safety. And yet\r\nat the very same time, this ilk also insists that its products are\r\nuniquely different from natural crops when it comes to enforcing its\r\npatents, a clearly hypocritical and duplicitous stance that proves\r\nthe illegitimacy of the entire GMO business model.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\nOn its corporate website, Monsanto clearly expresses its opinion\r\nthat GMOs are no different from natural crops, and thus do not need\r\nto be independently safety tested. This a highly convenient position\r\nfor the company to take, as it facilitates the unlimited propagation\r\nof untested GMOs under the guise that they are indistinguishable\r\nfrom any other crop in the natural world. And this is Monsanto’s\r\nofficial position on GMOs, mind you, and the one that the company\r\nstands by in defending its refusal to conduct long-term GMO safety\r\ntests on humans.\r\n<\/p>\r\n
\r\nBut if GMOs are “substantially equivalent” to non-GMOs, then how can\r\nMonsanto hold enforceable patents on any of its products? After all,\r\nGMOs and non-GMOs are exactly the same, right? Not exactly. When it\r\ncomes to enforcing patents on its “Frankencrops,” Monsanto holds a\r\nmuch different position on the substantial equivalence of its\r\nproducts and natural products. For purposes of generating tens of\r\nbillions of dollars annually from patent royalties, Monsanto\r\nadamantly insists that GMOs are uniquely different from non-GMOs.\r\n<\/p>\r\n
\r\nGMOs are both the same as and different than natural crops, in the\r\ntwisted world of Monsanto\r\n<\/p>\r\n
\r\nSo which is it? Are GMOs the same as non-GMOs or are they different?\r\nThere is no single answer to this question in the eyes of Monsanto,\r\nwhich shifts its answer to accommodate its own corporate interests.\r\nBut in reality, there can only be one true answer to this question,\r\nand science answers it for us quite clearly: GMOs are metabolized by\r\nthe body differently than natural crops, and almost always carry\r\nwith them harmful side effects.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n
