\r\n\r\nhttps:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/1644259806439943\/<\/a>\r\n \r\n\r\nhttps:\/\/youtu.be\/l3fZ-Adr_3I<\/a>\r\n\r\n \r\nFor those who are not familiar with prescribed burns, we live in a longleaf fire forest.\r\nSouthern pine trees are fire resistant, so burns don’t affect them much,\r\nbut the fire does cut back on vines and other undergrowth, as well as competing\r\noaks, sweetgum, and other trees.\r\n \r\nWildlife benefits.\r\n\r\n\r\nFor example, quail don’t like thick undergrowth.\r\n \r\nSuch burns used to happen naturally due to lightning.\r\nAnd Native Americans used to start fires for this purpose.\r\n \r\nDuring the forty years that Smokey the Bear recommended no forest fires,\r\nmy father and grandfather continued prescribe burns\r\non this land my grandfather bought in 1921.\r\n \r\nWe’re a bit behind due to weather and hurricanes the last few years,\r\nbut finally we’re catching up.\r\n \r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n \r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Thanks to Max Barzallo and Mary Clement for helping burn five acres around the house.
