Digging Gopher Tortoise
Had to chase her with the camera, but she eventually decided to dig in to get away from the dogs and me:
I noticed this gopher because the dogs kept yipping and running over to where she was. She eventually crawled off into the underbrush and went under, as you can see.
The pictures were taken with a wireless Ethernet camera, recorded by software run out of crontab every minute. The recording ends when it started to rain and I took the camera in.

Little Gopher
The dogs found this little gopher tortoise hiding in some oak leaves.
It’s only about 9 inches across. I’m not certain it’s a gopher, since it doesn’t have the flattened shell top. But it’s acting like a gopher, and is not near water.

Swamp Still Full, Dog Ecstatic
Fay filled the swamp, but it’s been a week now, so time to check.
Why yes, the swamp is still full, and the dog is ecstatic?

How do you tell when a 100 pound Rotweiller is ecstatic? When she turns into an alligator.
The water is down a couple of inches as you can see by the watermarks, but it’s still pretty full.

Why yes, the swamp is full, and the dog is happy about it:
This picture doesn’t demonstrate that the dog can swim, because our boots weren’t that tall.
In any case, thanks to 9 inches of rain from tropical storm Fay.

Cypress Swamp: Dry, Filling….
Here’s a dry cypress swamp, with human for scale (hi Clayton):
That was on Monday 18 August. Here’s the same swamp on Saturday, 23 August, after 4 inches of rain from tropical storm Fay, this time with human and dog for scale:
Fay dropped 5 more inches of rain on the swamp since then. Stay tuned to see if the dog can swim.
