Save Our Canopy Road

Lowndes County has picked the low bid to grub and clear the right of way on Quarterman Road starting Wednesday 12 November, unless the County Commission decides otherwise at its meeting of Tuesday 11 November. That means they’re going to tear down this canopy:

Quarterman Road

The majority of the households who live on Quarterman Road don’t want the road paved. Please help us stop the county from tearing down this canopy to pave the road.

Here’s a video drivethrough, and one going in the other direction.

A little farther down there’s another canopy:

Quarterman SW

Here’s a video drivethrough of that canopy.

Both these canopies will be destroyed starting Wednesday unless we convince the county commission to stop it Tuesday.

If you live in Lowndes County, please write the the county commission asking them to save our canopy road by not letting any contract to clear the right of way on Quarterman Road.

Rail for south Georgia and Bill Gillespie

Bill Gillespie and GA-01For a while I’ve been going on about commuter rail for Lowndes County. It turns out there’s somebody running for Congress from Georgia’s First District (GA-01) who wants to do mass transit for all of south Georgia, including busses and rail: Bill Gillespie.

If you’re near Valdosta today, you can meet Bill, and the incumbent, Jack Kingston, at the South Georgia Political Forum. Ask Bill and Jack about mass transit.

Valdosta in 1885, with Train Station

The Atlantic Coast Line train station shown in the previous post seems to be the one shown in this birdseye panorama of Valdosta in 1885:

I suspect this map was drawn by somebody who had never been there, judging by the trees. Still, it’s interesting.
